The consequences of living in small tribes

What does it really mean to be you? There are many philosophical and psychological theories on what it means to be an individual, but from the point of view of biology, it’s all about DNA. You may have read the analogy that says DNA is the blueprint of life, but what that analogy really means is: DNA is the blueprint to produce all the proteins and enzymes that make up… you!

DNA doesn’t just contain the secrets to your hair and eye color, it also determines what diseases you can fight off, who you’re attracted to and who you can gift organs to. This all came about because humans, for hundreds and thousands of years, lived in small tribes of about 100-150 people. You needed to be able to 1) sniff out relatives and 2) be absolutely repulsed by them so as not to breed with them.

See, the more varied your DNA, the better chances you had of surviving some mutated virus strain. Breeding with family members not only exposed recessive mutations, but it also decreased the variability of the immune system. In today’s world, we use these genetic similarities between people to see who is a good match for organ transplants. Your best results are going to be with family members*; even better if you have an identical twin because that’s your exact genetic match.

As people in the jewelry industry, we know that stacking jewelry (wearing more than one ring or necklace at a time) can be a pretty cool statement. So why not stack in a way that makes sense scientifically? Stack our DNA necklace with the liver or antibody pendant. Wear the heart pendant with chromosome earrings and a DNA ring and necklace. The possibilities are endless, just like the human genome.

*Unless you’re adopted or born via an egg/sperm donor. In these cases, it may be necessary to find the biological parents/donor(s). This is also why preserving cord blood is such a big trend nowadays.
